ALLIS CHALMERS D17 The D17 Allis Chalmers originally came out in 1957 as a replacement to the WD45. It, along with the smaller D14 introduced the "power director" clutch. The power director in the D17 Allis Chalmers used two clutches - one a conventional foot clutch, the other, a hand clutch. The hand clutch had both a high and low position. Another innovation was the roll-shift front axle, which allowed you to use tractor power to help make front axle adjustments. The tractor was tested at Nebraska under test 635 and 636. The 4 cylinder 226 ci gas engine developed 52.70 hp, the 262 ci 6 cylinder Allis diesel produced 51.14 hp. The D17 Allis Chalmers tractor was produced in four series, until 1966 when it was replaced by the 170. The D17 series four included live hydraulics and 3 point hitch. The real and toy D17 tractors are very popular collector items today.
